VALPARAISO REVIEW: Recommended Book

Somewhere between Mexico and a River Called Home is a full-length collection of poetry published by Pecan Grove Press and H. Palmer Hall. This book deals with the author, an Arab-American who was born and raised in a Border-American town. The book incorporates occasional Arabic (phonetic) words and Spanish words within the text of the poems, as the author, herself, resides between her ancestral Syrian tradition, her native West Texas tradition, and her espoused Mexican and Hispanic cultural traditions. Haddad celebrates these three cultures within the body of these poems and celebrates the resilient immigrant experience, celebrating the similarities between cultures and appreciating the rich differences which give each of these cultures their specific flavor and integrity.
